It has been raining recently. The TV reports the Tsuyu(rainy) season has come earlier than usual this year. However, the day of KIGA's walk is always sunny and it stopped raining today.
On Thursday June 7th at 8:30am, we started at Hoshiya station on the JR Wakayama line and we walked to the east side along the track.(Michi A.)

White flowers are telling us early summer has come. It is Yamaboshi, white parts are not flowers but bracts.

From Hoshiya station walking about 1km east along JR railway line, turn right, cross the railway and let's walk about a handred meters south.
you can see the plateaus growing wooden in the rice fields. Some stones such as Jizo Buddha and Hokyo-in-to are stacked in one place.
It is thought that Jizo statues and stone Budhist statues around Kumano-Kodo road were gathered here.

According to the data, adress 733 is Hanzaki Oji region. Untill recently there was a small shrine, but in Meiji 43, Hanzaki Oji's deity was moved to Ogura-Jinjya Shrine.
In November of Meiji era, the land was paid to private people, now it is inside the field of the 702 address. In addition, there was a temple hall at 732 address, but in Kaei years(1848~1855) it felled down by rainstorm.
In Meiji 45(1912 ), Koonji Temple was handed over free of charge, but now it became a orange field. It is written in the regional record.

Now the surroundings are rice paddis, there is noting to remamber the Oji at that tome. Also now it is the rice planting season.
A hill riminiscent of Hanzaki Oji on the background of Takazushi mountain is reflected on the surfece of water, it is early summer in japan.

There is an explanation boad on the road a little away. From here the ancient road head south. Walk to south in front of some private houses, and turn right at the second crossing and walk to the west, and walk down the road where the private houses lined up for a while.

When walking about 800m on the alley with the ambience of Showa era, turn right , there is Kawabata Oji at the intersection near Hoshiya Station.
The place name of Hosihiya originated from the fact that there was a house that gave foods and money etc. to the Kumano pilgrims who crossed the Kinokawa River

There is a sign board of Oguri Bridge.
From th Middle Ages, the legend of Oguri Hangan story is transmitted not only Kumano Kodo road but also to various parts of Hitachi(Ibaragi Prefecture.).Sagami( Kanagawa Prefecture.),Fujisawa(Kanagawa Prefecture.), Mino(Gifu Prefecture.) and Kishu(Wakayama Prefecture.)
As that which time Oguri lived and what kind of person in what country, it is written in “Kamakura-dai-soshi","Oguri-jikki","Oguri-ryakuenki","Oguri-emaki"(Sekko Oguri).
It seems that contents were also transformed gradually and spread in the Muromachi and Edo period, ant it seems that it was disseminated.
In the Edo era the Oguri Hangan story was also in the world of performing arts culture and it gained great popularitry among people in preaching talks, Joruri and Kabuki.

Mr.Satoh Yasui who live in Yunomine Hot springs Kumano Hongu wrote a book called "Oguri Hangan Monogatari(story)" several years ago.
According to "Kamakura dai-soshi", Ouei 30 years (1423 ad), Mitsushige Oguri and his son Sukeshige Oguri fought against Motiuji Ashikaga.
Oguri castle felll. After that, although they rebuilds the Oguri family(Oguri Castle), it has attacked by Motiujii Ashikaga in the Kosei 1st year (1455ad) again to surrended the castle.
Based on these historical facts, stories are composed.

In "Oguri Jiki" , Oguri Mitshishige lost the battle with Mitusige Ashikaga and the castle fallen. His son Sukeshige(Oguri Hangan) fell to the Mikawa-no-kuni. On the way to Mikawa he stayed at Sagami's Gongendo, "Yosiro-ga-yakata"
At that time the Yokoyama clan tried to kill him by a poisonous liquor. However, Yokoyama's daughter Terute knew about it and helped him, he survived the plot.
Although Oguri escaped to Fujisawa and was helped by monks, but he became a seriously ill due to the harm of poisonous liquor contained in his mouth.
Also,Terute was banished from her father and had spend hard days. With the help of Oguri's contact, she was able to meet him again. However Oguri was surprisingly seriously ill. With her strong will, Oguri who could not even walk ,Terute had put him on a Tuchi-guruma(a small cart that carried soil ). Oguri and Terute were aiming to go to Yunomine Hotsprings by depending other people's help.

This story is over 500 years old and has been told through the Muromachi, Edo and Heisei era long together with Kumano Faith. The factor is this story has spread to so many places so far and has been loved by people for many years.
What underlies the story is to question the way people live. It can not be thought of separating the relationship between God and Buddha, such as life and death of the people, this world and the afterlife or anxiety after death.

The story of Oguri was conveyed to various parts of Japan with Kumano Faith by Ippenshonin who is the founder of Ji Sect Sect of Buddhism, and monks as well as Kumano Bikuni(woman evangelist)

Takatsumi Shrine

The Kumano ancient road leads to Yata pass along the foot of Mt. Takatsumi. Turn left toward the mountain, and you come to Takatsumi shrine . A main shrine stands on top of Mt. Takatsumi(235m). From ancient times many people have come to pray here, so there stands a shrine on the foot of the moutain to bow to the direction of the upper shrine.

The main deities are Tsumatsuhime-no-mikoto and Itakeru-no-mikoto and Ooyatsuhime-no-mikoto. They are siblings and their father is Susanoo-no-mikoto, a brother of Amaterasu-no-mikoto in Japanese mythology. In 702 A.D. the three deites were seperated by an Imperial order.
Tsumatsuhime-no-mikoto stayed here in Takatsumi , Itakeru-no-mikoto moved to Idakiso, and Ooyatsuhime-no-mikoto moved to Kawanaga-udanomori. But the three deites are ensrined together here now.

Tsumatsuhime-no-mikoto is the main deity here, and enshrined in the center and the other deites are beside her. So this shrine has been named as "Taka-sanjo-myojin" , three deites on a high place.(Y.S.)

Wasa Daihatiro's grave
In the vicinity of the entrance of the mountain on the north side of prefectural road, there is the grave of Wasa Daihachiro of the Kishu Clan Archery Guidance.
Daihachiro had learned archery since childhood, showing superb physique and excellent talent.

In the Jyoukyo 3 years(1686A.D.),there was a competition at Sanjusangendo temple in Kyoto, which was held at the eaves of the main hall of the west side(121m long),and shot through the arrow from the south to the north day and night.

He shot through 8,133 arrows out of 13,053 arrows, and made a record. There remains an anecdote that Mitsusada Tokugawa, the lord of the Kishu Clan, welcomed him to the Kinokawa river.
This record is still not broken. (M.Y.)
