熊野古道最終の道、大雲取超え、小雲取超えは古い時代から、天国に一番近い地とされてきました。「小雲鳥」とも言われ、藤原定家の『熊野御幸記』によれば、那智から「雲取、紫金超え」を通ったと記載があり、紫金超えが小雲取超えではないかと思われます。この二つの山越えの道は熊野古道の中でも難所中の難所とされています。
5月17日、KIGAから14名が歩きました。
It's transmitted from the old times, the last road of Kumano Kodo, Ogumotori-goe and Kogumotori-goe are said to be the most nearly place to Heaven.
In Heian period, Fijiwara Teika(Sadaie) wrote a travel record "Kumano-gokoki". He says that he passed "Okumotori and Shikin-mine", it seems that Shikon-mine is this Kogumotori-goe(beyond small clouds).
These two mountain roads are the hardest roads in the Kumano Kodo road.
小口バス停から郵便局の前を通り、自動車道をしばらく歩いて、トンネルの上の道を小和瀬バス停に向かいます。小口自然の家の前にトイレがあります。小口バス停から小和瀬バス停まで約1km。
Pass throught the Koguchi post office from the Koguchi bus stop and head to Kowase bus stop. Walk the concrete road for a while and take the road above the tunnel.
You can see the public wash room in front of Koguchi-sizenno-ie (Nature's house). From Nature's house to Kowase bus stpo it is about 1km.
小口トンネルの上の道を歩きます。道路の右手の石段を上がって旧道に入りましょう。
Let go up the stone steps on the right side, it is an ancient road.
道路沿いの塀には野草が多くみられます。ユキノシタが咲いています。
Many wildflowers are growing on the fence along the road. Here you can see Yukinoshitas are in bloom.
500mほど歩くと、左手に小さな祠が見えてきました。
After walking 500 meters, you can see a small shrine on your left.
庚申塔(こうしんとう)です。台座に三匹に猿が刻まれています。庚(かのえ)申(さる)の日に、人の体に住むサンシという虫が、その人の行状を天帝に告口するので、その日は一晩中寝ないで起きているそうです。庚申の日は60日に一度回ってきますが、陰陽を合わせると60年に一度、という考え方もあります。申(さる)が時代の経過とともに、猿となり、いつしか台座に猿が刻まれるようになりました。三匹の猿はそれぞれ、見ザル、聞かザル、言わザルです。
This is the Koshin-to. There are three monkeys carved on the pedestal.
The villagers got together all night without sleeping on the day of Koshin(Kanoe Saru). Because the insenct named Sanshi was beleaved to be living in each human body who tells Tentei(King of Heaven) any bad actions they may do. The day of Koshin comes around every 60 days.
With the passage of time, it became the monkey with the same pronunciation as Koshin(Kanoe saru, saru=monkey), and monkeys were carved on the pedestal.
Each monkey has a name, one is called Mizaru(don't look at bad things), one is called Kikazaru (don't listen bad things) and anotherr one is called Iwazaru(don't say bad things). You may also have them call, hear no evil, see no evil and speak no evil.
野仏を見ながらトンネルの上の道を歩きます。坂を下るとさらに数体の野仏が並んでいます。
Walking along the tunnel while watching the small Buddaha. As you go down the slope a few more Buddha are lineing up along the road.
大きなセンダン(アフチ)です。5月には小さな花を咲かせています。
It is a big Sendan(Ahuchi).Small frowers are blooming in May.
小和瀬バス停から赤木川にかかる赤木橋を渡ります。昭和29年、この橋ができるまで、ここを通る人たちは渡し場を利用していました。小和瀬渡し場跡があったところです。
Cross the Akagi Bridge over Akagi River from Owase bus stop. This bridge was made in 1945, before that the people passed this river by ships. There is a trace of the Kowase Passage.
小さな標識がありますので、見落とさずに、ここから左折します。
There is a small sign, so do not overlook, turn left here.
いくつかの標識を見ながら、右折、左折を繰り返します。急な坂を上った所に「30」と記載されて木の標識があります。これは熊野古道を訪れる人のために500mごとに建てられた距離を示す標識です。ここが30で、目的地の請川が54ですから、これから約12km歩くことになります。
While lookong at some signs, turn left, turn right, repeat. There is a sign of tree where you climbed a steep slope. "30" is stated. This is a sign indicating the distance built for walker visiting Kumano Kodo. It stands every 500 meters.
登り坂が続きますが、平坦な道もあるので、ほっとします。
The climbing slope continues, but there are also flat road, so the pilgrims are relieved.
左手に石組の厨子があり、大小2体の石仏が祀られています。
There is a stone pagodas on the left hand side, and two big and small stone Buddhas are enshrined in it.
尾切地蔵です。大きい石仏の台座に「文化七年牛の三月建立 施主小和瀬中」と刻まれています。道中の安全祈願のため、村人たちが共同で建立したようです。
It is Ogiri-jizo. it is engraved on the pedestal of big Buddha, " Bunka 7 year march establishment owner Kowase-naka". It seems that the villagers co-founded for the safety of pilgrims.
古道はなおも登り坂です。 The ancient road is still climbing a slope.
白樺の木はブナでしょうか?
木の標識があります。 There is a wood sign board.
31です。かなり歩いた気がしますが、まだ500m?
It is written to "31". We walked pretty well, is it still 500m?
さらに上り坂が続きます。少し休憩したら、また歩きましょう。
The uphill continues still more. Let's walk again after a little break.
道路沿いにひっそりと咲く花が、歩く人の心を和らげてくれる気がします。
Flowers blooming quietly along the road seems to be relieve the hearts of walkers.
周囲の景観がかわり、遠くを見晴らすことができます。眼下に赤木川が見えています。
The surrounding landscape changes and you can look far away. The Akag River is visible.
ようやく桜茶屋跡に着きました。小和瀬から2,4km。標高差450mです。
Arrived at Sakura-Jaya, it is 2,4km from Kowase, The altitude difference is 450m.
桜茶屋跡/Sakura-jaya Tea House remains
茶屋の店先に桜の大木があったので、桜茶屋と呼ばれていました。ここから南に見える楠の久保辺りを通る白衣の参詣者の一団を見かけると、茶屋の主人は大急ぎで湯を沸かし、餅をついたそうです。またはるか下の方から、桶に入れた水を頭に載せて運んだと伝わっています。
茶屋は明治の末までありました。また、大正8年、宗教の建物として使われた記録も残っています。
Sakura-jaya Teahouse was named after a giant cherry tree that was located close by. In the old time when the teahouse owner saw pilgrims wearing white clothes approaching, he would start cooking rice cakes and boil water for tea.
He had carried water from far below by a pail on his head. It functioned as a teahouse up untill the early 20th century. (Y.S)
桜茶屋跡から数十メートル歩いた所に珍しい野生の花を見つけました。フタリシズカです。本当は花芯が2本あるのですが・・。
A rare flower is blooming where you walk tens meters from Sakura-jaya ruins. It is Hutari-shizuka (Two persons quiet)
この辺りに群生しています。 There are a lot of Hutari-shizuka.
「どちらへも遠く山路やおそ桜」。古道沿いに数基の歌碑が建っています。
" It is a long way to go through any road, I see cherry blossoms bloom late"
You can see several monuments which Tanka(Japanese poems) is written on it.
桜茶屋跡から桜峠まで、まだまが急な登り坂が続きます。桜茶屋跡から桜峠まで約0,5km。
From Sakura-jaya tea house ruins to Sakura-toge pass still steep climbing slope continues. It is about 0,5km from Sakura-jyaya to the top of the Sakura Pass.
峠の下り坂。左側の岩盤はどうしてできたのでしょうか?地球の変動によってできたかも?
Downhill of the pass. How did this rock mass be made? Maybe it happend due to changes in rock mass of the Earth?
木の根っこが岩盤の間に食い込んでいます。すごい生命力ですね?
The root of the tree is biting between the rock. It is a big force of this tree.
「三界萬・・」の文字を刻んだ石塔。三界とは人の迷いの世界のことで、地獄、餓鬼、畜生をさします。
There is a stone tower carved the wards of "Sankai Man…” Sankai means three world of people's hesitation. Those are said Jigoku(hell), Gaki(brat),Chikusyo(damn it or animal).
石堂茶屋跡 Ishido-tyaya remains
急な登り坂が続く桜峠を越えると、比較的平坦な尾根道となり、杉林の中を進むと石堂茶屋跡に着きます。東屋と歌碑があります。小雲取越えは険しい山越えのため、食料や物品を販売したり、宿泊できる茶屋や旅籠がたくさんありました。
元文4年の『熊野めぐり』には"石堂峠”に茶屋が2件あり、旅客を泊めていたと記されています。また寛文10年の『熊野詣機構』では"さハのたわ茶屋”と呼ばれています。嘉永元年の『西国三十三所名所図会』には"石砥茶屋”とあり、山中から砥石が採れたため名付けられたと記されています。
You walk above the Sakuratoge pass where the steep uphill slope continues, there become the relatively flat ridge path. When you go among the cedar forest, you will arrive at Ishidi-chaya teahouse remains.
There are arbor and monument is cribed with a poem. There used to be many teahouses and lodgings in Kogumotori-goe that can sell foods and goods and can accommodate because of the harsh mountains.
It is written in ”Kumano-meguri"(travel journal) that there were lodgings for travelers. Moreover, in " Kumano moude kiko"(travel journal) of Kansei 10 years(1789), it was called " Sawanotawa-chaya". In"saigoku 33sho zue",the first year of Kaei(1848),there was "Ishito-chaya" and it was named because of the grinding stone "Toishi" was taken from the mountains. (M.Y)
「歩まねバ 供養ならずと亡き母が のたまひてゐし 雲取り来ぬ 嶋 正央作」と書かれています。母と子の思いが伝わる句ですね。
賽の河原地蔵
石堂茶屋跡から、ゆるやかな下り道を約1,1km歩くと林道に出会い、左折して100mの所にトイレがあります。このコースで唯一のトイレです。林道から百閒ぐらまで0,9km。少し登ります。
Walking down the gentle slope about 1,1 kms from Ishido teahouse trace, you'll encounter the forest road and turn left there. There's a toilet 100m away. This is the only toilet in this course. It's 0,9m from the forest road to Hyakken-gura. You climb a little more.
"塞の河原”とは、死んだ子どもが行く所と言われています。子どもは親の供養のために石を積み上げます。しかし、積み上げられた石は、絶えず鬼に壊されてしまうのです。 その時、地蔵菩薩が現れて子どもを救います。 また地蔵菩薩は熊野で亡くなった人々の霊を弔うとも伝わっています。
It is said that Sai-no-kawara(Children's Limbo) is the place where dead children go. They piled up pebbles high for the repose of their parents. But it's towers was constantly being destroyed by evil Oni demos. Then Jizo or a Bodhisattva appeared to save them.
It's also believed that Jizo was built here for the repose of the souls of pilgrims who died on the way to Kumano.
百閒ぐらです。
石地力山、冷水山、安堵山と続く果無三脚の山々と、コンニャク山、野竹法巣山が連なる大塔の山並みを果てしなく望む景観が、多くの人を魅了してやみません。お地蔵さまが旅人を見守ってくれています。
歩いて歩いて、No50まできました。あと2km。頑張りましょう。
右手の前のほうに熊野川が見えてきました。本宮は近い!
本宮の請川へ下山する途中、民家の庭にブラシの木が見事に赤い花を咲かせています。
ようやく着きました。今日も1日、全員無事に歩くことができました。熊野の神さまに感謝です。
