Maruyama-Senmaida

Since ancient times, the southern part of the Kii Peninsula has been believed to be the place where souls of human beings wounld return after their demise.
Kumano has little flat land and is dominated with a number of deep mountains, providing picturesque views and mysterious spots.
One such spot is Maruyama Senmaida, or the one-thousand terraced rice paddy field in Maruyama.
Located neat the boundary between Wakayama and Mie Prefectures, the field has 1,340 paddies and boasts of having the largest number of them in Japan.
It is unknown when the Maruyama Senmaida started being built. There were 2,240 paddies in 1601, according to the local community’s data. The number dwindled to as low as 530 in the late 1980s because of the government’s policy promoting the conversion of rice production to ceder planting and also due to the aging and decreasing population of the area.
A sense of crisis arose among the area’s residents. The local municipality established a legislation to preserve the terraced paddy field and began to seek owners for the paddies from all over Japan. Today, about one-fifth of the 7.2-hectare paddy field belongs to such owners.
Many of the owners live in urban areas and they visit Maruyama every year to join in rice planting and reaping.ield belongs to such owners.
Maruyama Senmaida represents the efforts of the local people who for centuries have utilized the scarce amount of land in the recesses of deep mountains.
Unable to use farming machines, they plant and harvest rice by hands. The structure of the large terraces helps to decrease differences of elevation among paddies and secure the flow of water to all sections. The smallest paddy has only three rice plants.
The best season to observe the terraced paddies is just before and after planting. We can see paddies filled with water reflecting a blue sky and the sunset.(Mayumi O & Yasuo H)
