After about 15 minutes’ walk from Mozu-station, you can find Mozu-Hachiman-Gu-shrine.
This shrine enshrines Jingu empress, Chuai-emperor, and their son Hondawakeno-Mikoto.
Jingu empress was a powerful woman leader and ordered to invade south Korea to settle down the troubles with south Korea area in 3th Century.
After this war,it is said that Jingu empress and Hondawakeno-Mikoto came back to this place and prayed peace for a long generation.
There are thousands of Hachiman-Gu shrinesin Japan, which enshrine Jingu empress and Hondawakeno-Mikoto as the deity of battle especially believed by warrior (Samurai) in medieval times.
But it is said that Mozu-Hachiman-Gu was one of the origins of many Hachiman-Gu because of the above described story in 3th Century.

Nan-shu Temple

Nan-shu temple has three remarkable points.
The first is Choukei Miyoshi who built this temple in 1557 showing off his power. Recently he has become a noteworthy historical figure among history fans because he took the top power of Japan killing his lords, The Hosokawa clan and Ashikaga Shogun.
The second is that this temple used to be a center of tea ceremony. Once burned out during civil war, it was rebuilt by a famous Zen priest Takuwan. Then a lot of tea ceremony masters gathered here. You could find out foot stamps of them like tombs.
The third is a legend. They say, Ieyasu Tokugawa who is famous for as the champion of Warring States Period was killed here at his final stage. There is his tomb in the garden. They say that the second and the third Toukugawa shogun visited this temple for the tomb. (Masami F.)

We crossed the Ishizu River from Ishizu Shrine and walked southeast toward JR Tukuno Station. Then we walked further east along Senboku Route 2. There is Ebaraji Temple near Ebara Oike.
The wall is covered with somethings. White cloths or papers? Is this temple under renovation?

Ebara-ji temple was built by a high priest Gyoki in 704which was his birthplace. It’s said that Monjyu Bosatsu or
Wisdom Bodhisattava was first enshrined here in Japan. It’s known as “Chie no Monjyusan” or “Wisdom Bodhisattava” and became famous as a “Graffiti Temple”.
People in the Edo era stuck papers written their wishes on the walls and pillars. But after that, they began to write them directly with markers and chalks. So writing on them directly was banned.
Nowadays the outer walls and pillars are surrounded by lots of white handkerchieves written “Academic Success” for
the entrance examination.

Tairano Kiyomori also dedicated his horse to Otori Shrine

 Otori Taisya
If you take a train bound for Tennoji from the Wakayama Station and enjoy a ride for about an hour, you will spot on your left side a small forest in an Osaka suburb. The forest is so thick and green that it looks like a small bushy island floating in a residential area.

That’s the forest surrounding Otori Shrine, which means “a shrine of a big bird” and has been worshipped in the southern Osaka for more than 1,000 years.
The pilgrimage to Kumano gained momentum between 11th and the 12th centuries as many noblemen, including emperors in emeritus, headed for Kumano on the Kii Peninsula from the ancient capital of Kyoto. Kumano pilgrimage road runs just beside the shrine.

Among them was Taira no Kiyomori (1118-1181), the head of the powerful Heike clan. Kiyomori seized the power in western Japan and built the basis of samurai-ruled society.
In 1159, Kiyomori and his eldest son Shigemori were on the Kumano pilgrimage, accompanied by a dozen of subordinates on horseback. In the middle of the trip, the father and the son were informed that their archrival Minamoto clan staged a coup in the capital. Kiyomori decided to rush back to Kyoto.
On their way back to the capital, Kiyomori’s troop made a quick stop at Otori Shrine to pray for a victory in an upcoming battle. Kiyomori made a poem and dedicated it to the shrine. The poem reads:

Just like a silk worm grows into a moth and flies away, we are committed to winning a victory.
May God bless us Heike clan and protect us!

Why did many noblemen go on a Kumano pilgrimage? Even with power in their hands, Kiyomori and the others probably never felt relieved when they contemplated how long their clans’ prosperity would sustain. Emperor in emeritus Goshirakawa (1127-1192) made 33 trips to Kumano. The record was followed by his ground son Emperor in emeritus Gotoba (1180-1239), who visited Kumano 29 times. (Mayumi O)
