和歌浦天満宮 Wakaura Tenmangu

10世紀半ば、村上天皇の参議・橘直幹が大宰府から帰京する途中、和歌浦に立ち寄り、この地に神殿を建て道真の神霊を勧請し祀ったのが始まりという。
It is dedicated to Michizane Sugawara who has been known to be the god of learning. It is said to be one of three important Tenmangu along with Dazaifu and Kitano Tenmangu.
In the mid-10th century, a state councilor stopped by here on the way back to Kyoto from Dazaifu and dedicated a shrine to the spirit of Michizane Sugawara.
In 1606, the shrine buildings were reconstructed after cultivated the mid-slope of Mt. Tenjin by Yoshinaga Asano, the then Kishu lord. Practically they were reconstructed by Yoshimasa and Masanobu Heinouchi, a father and a son, whose birthplace was Negoro, Kishu. Later Masanobu Heinouchi became a master of carpenter of Edo Shogunate.
In ancient times,Toyouke Ohkami(Toyosukiiri Hime) searched for a plece where the sprit of Amaterasu Ohmikami was enshrined. It is said that she first settled at the Hamanomiya in Kinokuni. After that, she traveled all over Japan, after passing through this beach in Wakanoura.
The spirit of Amaterasu was finally enshrined at Ise Shrine.
The gods, Amaterasu Ohmikami and Toyouke Ohkami are enshrined in a shrine at the right side of Tanmangu Shrine.
