Kii route-9 To Enjyu beach from Hinomisaki
On the day 19th, it was the before day of spring Higan, I got on a bus from Gobo Station and came to Enjyu Beach. On this day, 10 members of KIGA participated. We were able to walk comfortably in good weather. It was 26,400 steps.
People lived in Hidaka district since ancient times and it seems to have been a plece where people from across the sea apprached. Misaki means "God's Guide" like Yatagarasu, the big crow in Kumano.
The place where Empress Jingu Kogo met her son, Hondawake-no-mikoto(Emperor Ojin) entrusted to Takenouchi Sukune, became the place name of Aubo. Au means meet, bo means mother.
Many people have moved around the sea. In ancient times, Emperor Jinmu and Xufuku came to the Kii peninsula. And in modern times Johannesk Knussen came from Denmark. A statue of Knussen, who died trying to help a Japanese sailor, is on a hill at the head of Hinomisaki.
Many villagers have also emigrated to Canada under the leadership of Guhei Kuno from Mio. The village where the returning people live is called "American Village” for some reason.
At :8:00am, we met at Gobo Station and came to Uminekojima Station by bus.
Let's walk towards the Hinomisaki Cape. I found an explanation board for the Manyo poem monument on the right side of the mountain base. But there was no monument there.
And when I looked at the sea, A song of Manyo was carved on a big rock.
There is a large rock on the left side of the road that leads to Hinomisaki, leaving Mio Village. A black stone was set in it, and a song of Manyo was engraved. This was written by Hisataka Omodaka. There are five songs related to Mio in Manyoshu, that is a collection of about 4500 poems in ancient poems. Among them, there were two songs that are said to have been made in this area in Wado 4 years(709 AD), when the imperial famiry visited here 1300 year sgo.
We walked toward the cape while watching the sea on the left. A gentle uphill continued.
On the way to the cape, go dawn the three-way road to left, you will find the Oga lotus pond. The anciet lotus about 2000 years ago were planted in this pond.
In 1953, this lotus was called Oga Lotus and was designated as a natural monument of Chiba Prefecture.
In 1962, some lotus roots were sent to Mihamatown by the recruitment of Mr. Sakamoto who was a Prefectural Hidaka High School teacher at that time, and was in an apprenticeship with Dr.Oga incollege. And this pond is called Oga pond because of his direct involvement in Mihama town from development to transplantation directly. (by T.S)
Again we backed to the road to Hinomisaki. Cherry blossoms were blooming.
We came near the Hinomisaki. Red flowers were blooming at the U curve.
We came to the last curve point. The blue sea was very beautiful on this day.
The monument of Captain Knussen stands on the hill of the Hinomisaki.
There is a statue of a man named Kunussen standing behind a monument on the Hinomisaki mountain top. The following explanation by Touseki Tsumura are engraved on the back side.
At around 9:40 pm on February 10, 1958, the Danish Ship Ellen Marks sailing from Nagoya to Kobe passed off the coast of Misaki. At that time, Kunussen found a ship where a fire boad broke out on the sea. He approached and dropped a rope ladder to rescue a Japanese sailor. But the tired sailor fell back into the sea as he was descebded ascending the ladder.
At that time, Johaness Knussen(39), who was sailing south had sailed first time as the chief engineer of the ship, jumped into the dark nignt sea to save the Japanese sailor.
That night, a northwest monsoon, with a wind speed of 20 meters and mountin like waves that were very strong, swept him away.
He disappeared with the Japanese crew man into the in Kishu Straights. Next morning, the bodies of Kunussen and the sailer were found on the Takui Coast in Hidakagun.
Becouse his love, he became a martyr saving those living on the sea, and shed light promoting brotherly love an peace not only in Japan and Denmark, but also around the world. A monument is set up here over looking the Kishu Stringts to pray for the spirit of Johaness Kunussen, and sea voyage protection. ( Honoring party to Johaness Knussenn) (by Michi)
There was a stone sign on the road leading from the Kunussen statue to the Kuno Gihei Memorial. It was engraved as " Pray to good luck and repellent".
On the way to Hinoyama Shrine, cherry blossoms were starting to bloom.
Hinoyama Shrine is located at behind the Kokumin Syukusya, national dormitory.
There is a frame that written as "Hinoyama Misaki Jinjya".
We came down to seaside from Hinomisaki. I felt like walking pretty much.
Umineko-shima”Benten-shima" came into view.
The yellow flowers were in blooming near my feet.
This is Mio coast. Ryuo Shrine is located in the forest over there.
We returned to the place where we got off the bus this morning.
Along the way to the forest of Ryuou shrine, The Japonicua Chloranthus flowers were blooming.
A Ako tree,Ficus superba var japonica, in the shrine was amazing. The explanation board wrote that the tree is 350 or 400 yeasr old,but shrine officer told me that it is actually growing for about 500 years.
The roots of the Ako tree were visible, but not on the ground. The overhanging branches were supported by concrete. It is designated as cultural property natuiral monument of wakayama prefectur.
Ryuou shrine
Walking up a small hill, you can find Ryuou shrine which has a good command of the view of fishing port of Mio village. Ryuou means a dragon which, villagers believed, brings a peaceful voyage and good fishery. The donators names of about 400 years ago were found on the ridge wood of the shrine structure. From ancient time, people drifted ashore this place, because Kuroshio sea current comes close this peninsula. It may be related to this location that Ryuou shrine enshrines a sea deity (Toyotama-hiko),and the deities of migrants from other places (Ookuni-nushi-no-mikoto,Saruta-hiko, Hondawake-no-mikoto). In the premise of shrine, a big old Akou tree (a kind of parasite tree) grows powerfully as aerial roots getting twisted each other. (By H.S.)
Kumeno Wakugo

He had two children, Oke and Woke. After escaping here and there, he settled in this Iwaya, rock hall, and said that he had finished his life.
The two grown-up children were inherited as Emperor Kenshu and Emperor Ninken. They have long sought theier father. But when they visied Mihono Iwaya, Kumano Wakugo had already died. (Michi A)
