Horutonoki, Portuguese tree
In the precincts of the Kirime-Oji, there is a horutonoki tree, which is designated as a natural treasure by the Wakayama Prefecture. The trunk circumference is about 4m, the root circumference is about 6m, the tree height is about 16m, and the age is about 300 years. The trunk splits into two at the base, covered with green moss, which is tall enough to look up.
Gennai Hiraga (1728-1780) discovered the trees in Wakayama prefecture and misunderstood them as olive trees. He was very happy and thought that they had olive trees in Japan.
He was from Shido, Sanuki City, Kagawa Prefecture, famous for extraordinary talented person in natural history, literary creation, painting, and mine development. His well-known episode is that he shocked people by electrocute them with a device generating static electricity.
It is Shinsenji Temple in Yuasa city where Gennai found the horutonoki tree, which is famous because there is a tsunami record stone monument at the gate.
Gennai brought the sapling back to the Takamatsu clan and cultivated it in the clan's botanical garden. The horutonoki tree was transplanted in front of Gennai Hiraga Museum in Sanuki city. (M. Fukuoka)

Ashinomiya
“Ashinomiya”is located in the precincts of Nakayama Oji shrine in Inami town. It is said to have miraculous cures for leg pain.
There is a story about this.
A mountain monk was training in Kawachi(Osaka Prefecture),about 370 years ago. Suddenly he came up with the idea of pilgrimage to Kumano.
So,he went to Mt.Nachi, and completed his training at Nachi Falls. When he came to Nagui valley, the cold weather and fatigue made his chronic leg pain worse. There were no doctors or medicines in the countryside,so the villagers could only just wait and see. The monk died because of his leg pain.
Then the villagers buried him respectfully as an apology for not being able to take care of him adequately and built a grave maker. A few days later,it growed in golden yellow and the villagers were surprised.
Therefore,it is said that the villagers built a shrine to worship his virtue. (Michiko.Y)

Prince Arima's Manyo Kahi monument inscribed with Manyo poems
We can see the sea proceeding on the road in the village along the national highway after turning left(east) at the monument of Tokuhon Shonin. That's the Minabe Bay. I think the scenery far away are the Cape Mezu, Tanabe City and Shiraham hot spring area from the near side. Additionally saying, although it is raining intermittently in the late autumn, we can see the the bule ocean far away on the south side.
We walk about 300m in the village. There is a Hashigadani bus stop when we enter Minabe-cho from the Hashigadani of Inami-cho. The road meets up with the National Route 42 on the east side. We continue walking about 500m in the east from there. Then the memorial monument written with Prince Arima's "Musubi-no-matsu" stands with the Pacific Ocean on the back on the right side area which is at Nishi-Iwashiro, Minabe-cho along the national Route 42. It is made of natural stone, 1.9m high and 1.35m wide. The manyo poems are written on the back. Beside the monument, there was a pine tree which was tied by Prince Arima. The pine tree that Price Arima bound had died up and now there is a newly planted pine tree there.
Prince Arima was born in 640 (the Asuka period). His father is the Emperor Kotoku (the ex-Empress Kogyoku's younger brother). After his death, although Prince Arima was the heir to the throne, ex-Empress Kogyoku succeeded the throne once again as the Empress Saimei. Prince Arima was provoked into rebellion by Soga Akae who was a retainer of the Empress Saimei. The Crown Prince Nakano-o'e-no Oji, who recieved a report of a rebellion from Soga Akae ordered to apprehend the Prince Arima on November 9, 658. It is said that the Crown Prince Nakano-o'e-no Oji who was a child of the Empress Saimei intervened in the background.
On the way that Prince Arima was taken to Muro-no-yu hot spring (now Kinosaki hot spring in Shirahama-cho) in Kii Province(now Wakayama prefecture) where the Empress Saimei and his son, the Crown Prince Nakano-o'e-no Oji stayed, Prince Arima stopped at Nishi-Iwashiro, Minabe-cho. He bound the branches of a pine tree there and wrote the following "waka", classic Japanese short poems .
I bind the branches of a pine tree on Iwashiro Bay. If all goes well, I'll return to see them here again.
"Binding the branches of a pine tree" in this poem means a kind of magic spell that holds people's lives together or survives. It does not just mean conectting pine branches. It is also thought that Prince Arima prayed to the gods for help.
After that, Prince Arima was interrogated about rebellion by the Crown Prince Nanano-o'e-no Oji at Muro-no-yu hot spring. Prince Arima replied at that time about the rebellion, "The heavens and Akae might know why, but I don't know at all." I think Prince Arima wanted to say that he was provoked into rebellion by Soga Akae.
On Nobember 11, 658, Prince Arima was sent back to Asuka. On the way back, when they arrived at Fujishiro Hill in Kainan city passing through Nishi-Iwashiro, where the Manyo poem’s monument is located, Prince Arima was strangled. He was killed at the young age of 19. There is not a poem left in "Waka", whether Prince Arima saw the pine branches that were tied on Iwashiro Bay on his way back. (S. Hiramatsu)
